Springer Spaniel

Wuthering Heights

The Springer Spaniel, called Fanny by her mistress, is a minor but resonant presence in Wuthering Heights, a creature whose brief appearances illuminate the novel's darkest currents of cruelty and neglect. Owned by Isabella Linton, the spaniel is first glimpsed in the pampered, artificial world of Thrushcross Grange, where the Linton children's treatment of a small dog reveals their spoiled and quarrelsome natures. Later, the spaniel becomes the victim of one of Heathcliff's most chilling acts of casual violence, an episode that foreshadows the abuse Isabella herself will suffer at his hands. Through Fanny, the novel explores the vulnerability of the innocent and the way cruelty toward animals mirrors cruelty toward humans, a theme that runs throughout the narrative's depiction of the Earnshaw and Linton households.
